Remember: three quarters of Scouting is“outing”

The Boy Scout Program is an outdoor adventure program. Camping is the predominant application of the outdoor adventures. Travel, sightseeing, visiting national and state parks, hiking, climbing and many more adventures also apply to the outdoor adventure plan.

Camping is the focus of our outdoor programs here. Units choose to go camping as fits their activities and advancements programs. Utilizing a variety of types of camping, scouting units train their young men to be experienced in the wide variety of outdoor adventures. We emphasize everything from day-campouts through long-term resident camp programs. Most units employ overnight campouts on weekends each month of the year. This includes our famous Klondike Derby snow campout held each February in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

The Sequoia Council operates two campgrounds and three campout venues each year.
Our premiere resident camping experience of Camp Chawanakee at Shaver Lake – a week of “mile high camping” adventures. The Council’s alternate site of Camp Wortman is located in the southern portion of our council and is a primitive camp ground with minimal facilities and support. It is great for unit camping training adventures.

Each winter an outstanding group of mountain pioneers hosts the famous Klondike Derby at Camp Chawanakee. They set up a series of towns named after the towns from the 1896 Alaskan Klondike Gold Rush. Each town is a skill event for Scouts to earn gold and skill points for awards. The highlight competition is the Iditarod Sled Race “Sierra Style.”

Our Cub Scouts experience the total fun of a week long Day Camp adventure, it includes one optional overnight campout. Day camp is conducted by each District locally. And lastly but certainly not least is the Great Annual Webelos Campout . The campout is run by the Boy Scouts to prepare the Webelos for their bridging over to Boy Scouting. Here the Webelos are introduced to Boy Scout skills, merit badges, campfire activities and high adventures.

In addition to these activities, each Boy Scout Troop, Venture Patrol and Varsity Team organize and conduct their own unit camping adventures.

Below are links to each of the camping programs we provide. The Order of the Arrow lodge of the Sequoia Council annually produces a “places to go camping” resource called “Packs, Poles and Paddles.” This link will demonstrate the value of this resource and how you can get a copy for your unit’s library.
